Version 5 URL changed - Error: 'VEMap' is undefined on Via Virtual Earth Blog

It has been reported that the old url to access the Version5 javascript for Virtual Earth no longer works. This is effecting sites worldwide.

The correct way to reference the Version 5 javascript is:

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://dev.virtualearth.net/mapcontrol/mapcontrol.ashx?v=5"></script>

If you have been effected a forum thread has been started here

Silverlight Virtual Earth viewer on Via Virtual Earth Blog

With the launch of silverlight yesterday I was digging around and found this viewer for Virtual Earth by Greg Schechter. It does use the 1.1 alpha of silverlight. It gives some interesting ideas for where Virtual Earth could be headed. Certainly the demo of the performance of silverlight compared to javascript for processing showed a significant increase. This could be very useful.

And of course on the gamer front check this out by Andy Beaulieu and shoot down some UFO's over Birdseye images.

A big thank you to the efforts of Derek Chan who posted his third VE article today (he actually had it ready weeks ago but had to wait for Mr Bottleneck here at VVE ;) )

The 3 articles are all relivant to Version 5 of Virtual Earth and deal with the Mini Map, debugging javascript and now custom pins in routes.

All these can now be found in our articles section.

If you have something to contribute send us an email.

Virtual Earth Mobile - Problems on VirtualEarth Mobile

Problems on VirtualEarth Mobile by Raymond on 16 Nov 06 @ 13:29:00 UTC

I have installed VirtualEarth Version 1.68 on my Pocket PC. I set the cache memory to 50000Kb onto my 4G SD card, hopping I could load more map tiles, At first I did successfully cached the complete arieal maps for Hong Kong, Macau, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, but suddently I encountered the following Error Message:-

VirtualEarthMobile.exe

IOException

__Error:: WinIOError +0x8a

File:: Move +0x55

DownloadRequest:: Download +0xdd

DownloadRequest:: DownloadQueueThread +0x57

TileManager:: DownloadQueueThreadProc +0xc

After that, I closed and restarted the program, same errors occured.

I then deleted and re-installed the program, but the same errors still occured.

Please if you could advise me on how to solve the above problems. Thanks Very Much!

Mostly worked great first time on my less-than-impressive Verizon PPC/XV6600 (Audiovox/Ustar). Major omission on the address feature: why no linkage to Contacts/Address Book? How stupid is that? And the entry is not very forgiving. I found the only reliable address entry method was to enter just the ZIP code...and to be sure to click DONE, not OK.

I can't even do that, whenever i try to located anything by address on my AT&T 8525 it just crashes..

VirtualEarthMobile.exe

FormatException

Application::Run+0xf

FormPocketEarth::Main+0xb

that's the details.. all i put in was a local zip code of 48316 and it just went down.

very very very annoying, it used to work. any idea?

thanks!

For everyone having problems, note that the author of this app has released a new program that does the same thing and more! Grab <a href="http://virtualearth.spaces.live.com/Blog/cns!2BBC66E99FDCDB98!8910.entry">Windows Live Mobile Search</a> :)
